Space Invaders
Space Invaders is an arcade video game designed by Toshihiro Nishikado and released in 1978. It was initially manufactured and sold by Taito in Japan, and later licensed for production and distribution in the United States by Midway Games, a division of Bally Technologies. Space Invaders is one of the first space shooter games. It is one of the most important video games in history. Its objective is to eliminate waves of aliens with a laser cannon and score as many points as possible. For the game's design, Nishikado drew inspiration from Breakout, War of the Worlds, and Star Wars.
Although it is a simple game by today's standards, it was one of the forerunners of modern video games and helped expand the industry from a mere novelty to a global industry.
The success of this video game upon its release was so great that there was a severe shortage of 100-yen coins in Japan, as they were used in arcades. The government increased the number of coins in circulation to meet the demand. It is estimated that the original arcade game sold over 160,000 units worldwide. In 2007, it was estimated that Taito may have earned $500 million from it.
