Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (officially abbreviated as Call of Duty: MW3 or Modern Warfare 3) is a first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, with additional work by Raven Software, and published by Activision. The game, preceded by Call of Duty: Black Ops and a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, is the eighth main title in the Call of Duty series. It was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Wii, and Nintendo DS. The international version was released on November 8, 2011, except for the Wii version in Australia, where it was released on November 17. The Japanese dubbed and subtitled versions were released on November 17 and 22, 2011, respectively.

 

The game's story picks up directly where Modern Warfare 2 left off, with the United States under siege by Russian forces, the ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov at large, and Captains "Soap" MacTavish and John Price wounded and on the run, along with Russian informant Nikolai and Private Yuri, who plays a crucial role in the game. The game is, chronologically, the final installment in the Modern Warfare series, concluding the story arc that began in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

 

Due to the legal dispute between Activision, Infinity Ward, and the developer's former co-executives, which resulted in numerous layoffs and resignations at the company, Sledgehammer Games assisted with the development of the single-player campaign, while Raven Software handled the online multiplayer content.

 

The game was a commercial success, selling over 6.5 million copies in the United States and the United Kingdom alone, generating a total of $400 million. According to Activision, it was the biggest launch in the entertainment industry up to that point.
