DJ Hero is a music video game developed by FreeStyleGames and published by Activision as a spin-off of the Guitar Hero franchise. It was released on October 27, 2009, in North America and on October 29 in Europe. The game is based on turntablism, the creation of new musical works by remixing one or more songs and using sound effect generators. The title features 94 remixes of two songs, for a total of approximately 100 songs across various musical genres. To score points, the player must press the corresponding buttons to play sounds in time with the beat, adjust the crossfader slider (to select one channel or the other), and scratch the controller's platter at the moment indicated by the markers on the screen. The game includes a single-player career mode, as well as cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes. Additionally, there are songs that can be played by a player using a Guitar Hero guitar, alongside the player controlling the DJ. Many DJs and music producers have contributed to the game, both in its development and by creating remixes, as well as by lending their likenesses for the playable characters. Among the DJs featured in the game are DJ Shadow, Z-Trip, DJ AM, Cut Chemist, J.Period, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Hashim, and Daft Punk.
