Berzerk is an arcade shoot 'em up video game, distributed in 1980 by Stern Electronics.
The player controls a green, humanoid character. Using a joystick (and a fire button to activate a laser weapon), the player navigates a simple maze filled with robots that fire lasers at the player character. The player can be eliminated by being shot, colliding with a robot, coming into contact with the electrified walls of the maze, or being touched by the player's nemesis, Evil Otto.
Alan McNeil, an employee at Universal Research Laboratories (a division of Stern Electronics), dreamed one night about a black-and-white video game in which he had to fight robots. This dream was the basis for Berzerk, which was named after the Berserker series of science fiction novels. "Evil Otto" was given to him by Dave Otto, McNeil's boss at Dave Nutting Associates.
